Having scrapped rod licence cards, the Environment Agency has used the money saved to boost their Fisheries Improvement Programme (FIP) fund by nearly 50%.

As a result, organisations and clubs across England can apply for a share of £730k to protect and improve fish stocks and habitats, provide new angling facilities and give more people the opportunity to try fishing.

Last year the FIP aided all manner of projects, from the creation of new fishing platforms through to in-river work, the latter of which the Wild Trout Trust (WTT) benefited from.

“The FIP money enabled us to run a habitat workshop in Northumberland, where we underlined the value of large woody material to the river,” said Shaun Leonard, director of the WTT.
