Match angling superstar Jamie Hughes recently set his sights on catching a sturgeon on the pole – but he got a lot more than he bargained for when he landed this fish of 36lb!
The current Maver Match This champion was fishing The Basin at Lancashire’s Whitmore Fisheries, where he hooked what he soon knew was a huge fish on a 6mm hard pellet. It plodded around the swim for 15 minutes before it gave up the struggle.
But Jamie had to take things easy, because he was using a relatively light 0.15mm hooklength and size 14 hook to tame it.
“I could feel the line pinging off it during the fight, and I knew it had to be a big sturgeon,” he said.
“I’ve never before hooked a fish on the pole that’s made me feel useless, but this one certainly did!"
“I knew that at any point in the fight it could destroy me if it wanted to.”
Thankfully, former Fish O’Mania winner Andy May, a great mate of Jamie’s, was on hand to net the fish, which also turned out to be the biggest in the lake.
The whole battle was captured on camera, and you can watch the footage and full challenge for free by visiting the Winning Ways YouTube channel.
