Angling club urges others to host more fishing sessions for schoolkids

An angling club hosting weekly fishing sessions for schoolkids is urging others to do the same, after seeing a surge in youngster participation.

Rochford Angling Club in Essex has spent two years hosting parties of schoolchildren, as well as Scouts, at its Falklands Lake.

“Most of the children have never fished before, but the smiles on their faces when they catch is ample reward for our efforts,” said Rochford AC member Dave Bates.

“They fish from around 12.30pm to 3pm, and even the most squeamish ones end up holding fish and baiting their own hooks,” he added.

“Since sessions began, our junior membership has increased by 300 per cent. We’ve even had some of the parents join too. I hope other clubs can do something similar to encourage the next generation of anglers.”
