Fishing to return at Attenborough

FISHING is set to return to Attenborough gravel pits in 2023 after the Angling Trust challenged the decision by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust (NWT) to suspend sport at the popular Midlands venue.

Back in late May NWT announced a 12-month suspension of all fishing permits at the famous bream water after negotiations broke down with the lease-holding Nottingham Anglers’ Association (NAA). However, this week club members were given reason to celebrate after agreement was reached for the suspension to be lifted. NAA’s General Secretary Dave Turner said: “With the help of the Angling Trust we’re back on track and look forward to sorting out our return next season on the basis of an agreement that is fair to all.”

Further discussions will focus on the suitable areas for angling, but for now, the Trust’s Martin Salter is pleased that NWT is back on side.

“Given the huge threats to our environment from pollution, abstraction and over-development, we need everyone who cares about nature and the countryside pulling together and that includes anglers and members of wildlife trusts,” he said. “There’s no place for anti-angling sentiments in public bodies and it was good to have this clarified by the top team at the NWT.”
