Most anglers who go a long time without winning a match break their streak in a small open event. However, Shaun Bryan put aside the heartache of five years without a victory by becoming the Division One National’s individual champion!
Having drawn the favoured peg 37 in D section at Appley Bridge, the Sensas Lobby angler remained unfazed, despite facing competition from 409 other hopefuls. He was eventually crowned the winner, thanks to a 15.950 kg netful of bream and skimmers.
His swim—located within a wide bay—had produced good results in practice matches, but there was always the lingering doubt about whether those bonus fish would show up.

“The peg looked perfect, but you always have that doubt that the fish might not bite,” Shaun revealed.
“After starting on the pole for some small silvers, I moved out onto the long pole with a piece of worm tipped with a maggot or pinkie. Immediately, I hooked a big skimmer, and from that point, the fishing was great for a couple of hours.”
“When the action faded, I couldn’t help but feel my chance might have gone. Then Paul Sanderson on the next peg cast a little feeder out and caught a bream. I’d set up a rod, so I followed suit, caught one too, and that gave me a little boost. I just kept ticking over from there.”
“I still can’t believe that after not winning a match for years, I’ve gone and won the National!”
Paul ended the day in second place overall, bringing 12.250 kg to the scales.
