Fly fishing tactics fool giant Midlands pike

Over recent seasons fly fishing has accounted for an ever-increasing number of large pike, and last week Carl Hill became the latest angler to use the tactic to devastating effect.

He banked this 36lb fish from a Midlands reservoir using a ‘Dragontail Bulkhead’ pattern, which he fished on a fast retrieve in the hope of improving his fortunes following a slow start.

The Leicester angler didn’t initially think it felt particularly special… an opinion he soon changed when the pike tail-walked with its entire body out of the water as it shook its head. Carl’s stout tackle did its job, and the fish – which beat Carl’s previous PB by 6lb – was safely landed.
