A four-year-old girl has just landed a fish regarded by many to be one of angling’s ultimate prizes – a 3lb 4oz roach.

Alicia Rogers was fishing with her dad, Daniel, at a venue in south-west Scotland when she hooked it on a Method feeder and 8mm wafter hookbait.

FANCY CATCHING A BIG ROACH YOURSELF? THESE ARE THE VENUES TO DO IT.

“We often go fishing there of an evening and every now and again I’ll give her a turn at playing some of the small carp, that live in the water,” Daniel told us.

“On this trip, some surprise big roach showed up, and after I’d landed two, I gave Alicia a turn. She picked out the brightest pink wafter she could find, and on hooking a fish we were surprised to see this massive roach surface. I know anglers who have chased a fish like this for years. I’m so proud of my young daughter.”

At first sight, the team at Angling Times wondered if the fish was a hybrid, due to its dark colour, but fish expert Dr Paul Garner thinks otherwise.

“It looks very similar to some of the other big southern Scottish roach that’ve been reported over the last few years,” he said.

“I can’t see anything that makes me think it isn’t a roach, although some of the ‘characteristic areas’ can’t be seen clearly.”

Either way, it’s a fantastic fish for a four-year-old!
