If there's one thing that makes a special catch even better, it’s sharing it with a good friend, and that’s exactly what Gary Knowles and Ed Matthews did last week when they each landed 3lb roach on a memorable session.
The pair are regular fishing companions and took the haul from a Shropshire stillwater, where they also added a smattering of ‘twos’ on maggot feeder tactics. It was Gary who enjoyed the first of the action, as he told Angling Times.
FANCY A CRACK AT A SPECIMEN ROACH YOURSELF? HERE ARE SOME GREAT TIPS FOR CATCHING THEM.
“I had three big roach on my left-hand rod in quick succession, weighing 2lb 2oz, 2lb 7oz and 2lb 13oz. Shortly after, my right-hand rod was away, and before long I’d landed another two cracking fish, of 2lb 14oz and 3lb 8dr.”

Assuming, from the pattern of the bites, that the roach were moving from left to right, Ed decided to ‘up sticks’ and drop into a swim to the right of Gary. It proved an inspired decision, as his first bite of the day came from a new personal best roach scaling 3lb 1oz 8dr.
“He followed that up with three more two-pounders,” Gary added. “Safe to say, it was a real red-letter day!”
