If recent catch reports are anything to go by, and you like catching big perch with lures, you need to get out now to make the most of the great fishing currently on offer. Huge fish are being caught nationwide, particularly on the larger reservoirs, and are falling to a variety of lure fishing methods.

Phil Lane managed to get in on the action, which saw him land a new PB in the shape of a 4lb 8oz perch. His initial plan to fish the Thames being delayed due to floodwater, so both he and his fishing partner, Matt Glover, decided to head to Grafham, with plans to catch from the water they blanked on previously.

“We spent much of the morning fishing deep areas but, as the weather worsened, we looked for a more sheltered spot," Phil told us.

“After getting a couple of decent knocks on a drift in 15ft of water, we anchored up and concentrated on that area.

“With 4ft of weed rising up from the bottom, I decided on a crankbait that fishes around 10ft down, so it’d be working just over the top of the green stuff."

“Putting in cast after cast, my mind had started to drift, then the rod-tip suddenly slammed round!

“I was expecting a small pike or zander to be the culprit, such was the fish’s power, so my legs went to jelly when a huge perch then surfaced!"

“At 4lb 8oz, and measuring 49.5cm, it had plenty of room to pack on more weight over winter!”

“After landing a 5lb 4oz reservoir perch, I returned and had a great four-fish catch, topped by this one of 4lb 10oz, and backed up by others of 4lb 8oz and two at 3lb 13oz.

“I started the day on a crankbait, on which I had one fish while they were fired up and prepared to chase the lure.

“But, as the day progressed, the mood of the fish changed, so I switched to a drop shot set-up with a small lure, which got me the final three bites.”
