CATCHING big eels by design is widely seen as one of specimen fishing’s ultimate challenges, but a schoolboy has just proved that, with a slice of luck, anything is possible in angling.

Young Jack Osborne was carp fishing at a lake near Lydd, in Kent, when his dad Mark went off to get fish and chips.

But when he returned, he found Jack and his uncle Darren sat in awe, looking down at a huge 6lb 8oz eel lying in the bottom of the landing net.

“It was the size of a large man’s arm!” Mark told us.

“Jack landed it all by himself, despite the fish giving a great scrap after taking his boilie hookbait. The funny part was that my brother, who was with us, has fished for eels for 30 years and has never caught one like that.

“He was gutted!”
