On October 19, 2024, a unique global angling event will take place on the Shropshire Union Canal. Hosted by the Canal & River Trust and sponsored by Daiwa, the Daiwa Global Communities Celebration will bring together young people with ancestral connections to over 35 countries.

The event aims to promote inclusivity, community, and healthy living through fishing. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with others from diverse backgrounds, learn new skills, and enjoy the beauty of the canal environment.

The celebration will feature an opening ceremony, where representatives from each community will carry their national flag. Throughout the day, participants will compete in various angling challenges, with prizes awarded to the winners.

The event is part of the Canal & River Trust's Let's Fish program, which aims to introduce young people to fishing and its benefits. The program is supported by funds raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery and has helped to create new anglers and strengthen communities.

John Ellis, national fisheries & angling manager at the Canal & River Trust, expressed his excitement about the event: "It's fantastic to see so many communities represented at this Global Celebration. Fishing is a truly inclusive and accessible sport, and we hope to see even more overseas countries represented in the future."

The Global Celebration is open to young people aged 7 to 20 years old who have ancestral connections to one of the participating countries. Participants will be divided into four age categories and compete for the title of champion.
