How often does it happen that when fishing for larger fish with strong tackle, you get no bites, but when you switch to a lighter rig or target smaller species, the bigger fish you were after suddenly take the bait?
It happens that often, it is as if they are more cautious than we care to realise, either that or the presentation changes enough they are willing to accept it. Whatever the reason, hooking specimen fish on light tackle can make for an interesting battle as Mark Everard found out on a recent feeder fishing session.
“I was pretty chuffed with this 5lb 8oz chub I caught from a fast and swirling upper Thames on light roach quivertip tactics.
“In the swift water, it gave me a fine old run-around on a 2lb hooklink, and I eventually netted it 50 yards downstream!
“I was using my usual roach legering kit, a cage feeder filled with liquidised bread and a breadflake hookbait on a size 12 Kamasan B520.
“It was bitterly cold on the hands, with a wind chill of 1oC. Hardly ideal conditions, but you’ve got to be in it to win it!”
