Huge bass caught by hand

As anglers, we are familiar with catching fish with a rod and line, but how many of us can say we have caught a fish using just our bare hands? One angler who can is Aiden Aisher, who managed to catch a 7lb 15oz bass using just his thumb.

Walking along a pontoon in a local harbour on the Isle of Wight, Aiden was going to collect some crabs to use as bait when he noticed the bass lurking underneath. The angler in him just had to try and grab it, and as he lowered his hand into the water, rather than spooking, the bass decided to attack his hand.

"It was just like a normal day really, going crabbing down to my local harbour where I keep my crabs alive for bait," Aiden told us.

"As I was walking along the pontoon, I could see a fish's tail just underneath."

"It is not unusual to see fish underneath the pontoon, but normally when you put your hand in, they just swim off. But this one didn’t."

"It came out like a rocket and grabbed my thumb. In shock, I just gripped the fish’s mouth as hard as I could with my thumb in its mouth and my fingers under its gills."

"Before I could really comprehend what was happening, I had hauled the bass from the water and it was on the pontoon with me. It was a good fish too, at 7lb 15oz, and a great bonus to just collecting crabs!" he added.
