Angling often has a way of shocking us, whether you are fishing for the first time or have graced the bank for decades, you never truly know what you might catch on your next session. This is exactly what happened to Kyerell Clarke while out lure fishing on lake close to his home. Hoping to catch some of the resident pike and perch, he instead ended up having the surprise of his life, landing a monster 30lb 4oz carp that took a liking to his lure.
“I’ve been having some success with the lure rod this winter on my local lake, and I’ve had some really enjoyable sessions,” Kyerell told us.
“The nice thing about it is that it gets me out of the house for a few hours, and the frequent casting that comes with lure fishing helps keep me active and interested on those cold days,” he added.
“With some milder weather on the way, I decided to head down to the lake, hoping to tempt a few of the resident pike and perch.”
Kyerell started the day in one of his favoured swims, the water is slightly shallower and it is generally good for a bite or two. Opting for his favourite imitation perch lure, he made a cast and it within a few seconds he had a bite.

"I couldn’t believe it—on my very first cast, the lure got smashed, and the reel went into meltdown as the fish bolted off into the lake," he recalled.
"At first, I thought it was a pike, but after a few minutes, the dull, heavy fight left me completely puzzled as to hat I had hooked."
"After 20 minutes, I finally managed to bring the fish to the surface, and I was utterly shocked to see a huge carp on the end, with my tail lure hanging out of its mouth."
"The fish weighed 30lb 4oz and turned out to be one of the known fish, named Blackspot. It’s a capture I’ll never forget—I’m still buzzing now!" He concluded.
