Barbel are famed for the brutal bites they can give, but occasionally even the largest of fish can produce relatively delicate indications, as was the case with this River Derwent specimen.

It was landed by West Yorkshire angler Tom Hague, who received a very slow run before hooking into his prize.

It took a 15mm boilie fished alongside a PVA bag of 8mm halibut pellets, and initially Tom was sure he’d hooked a small fish. Then, when it started stripping line, he caught a glimpse of it and was left in no doubt that he was connected to a new PB.

Tom had landed a 9lb 4oz barbel earlier in the session, but the size of this second fish eclipsed that. At 15lb 9oz, it’s believed to be the largest caught from this stretch of the Derwent so far this season.
