Huge eel leaves angler trembling with excitement

While fishing for bream, Jeff Holland was left in ‘complete shock’ when he landed this eel of 6lb 4oz.

The 69-year-old was fishing with his identical twin, Phil, on Eccleston Mere in St Helens. The pair have fished the water for 45 years, and although they’ve caught bream to double figures, they have never heard of an eel from the natural venue.

We were loosefeeding casters and fishing a bomb over the top, with four maggots as the hookbait, catching quality roach, when Jeff hooked something completely different and landed an eel of around 3lb,” Phil told us.

“That was a complete shock, and then, a few casts later, he hooked the giant which fought really hard."

“Eventually, after 15 minutes, the eel was netted. It was in beautiful condition and was landed on a size 14 hook and 6lb hooklink, capping a memorable day.”
