HUGE perch from Northern river

THE River Ribble has been in great form this season, and as well as its big barbel and prolific shoals of silverfish, the venue also holds some cracking perch, as this 4lb 10oz specimen taken by local angler Mark Kellett shows.

He targeted a snaggy swim where he’d located some good fish previously, and retrieved a soft plastic TRD lure at ‘snail’s pace’ along the riverbed. It’s one of Mark’s favourite lure patterns, and on just his fourth cast he was reminded why when he felt an almighty ‘thump’ on the rod-tip.

After lifting into the fish, he could tell immediately that it was a good one due to the heavy headshakes reverberating up the braided mainline. After a tense battle on his ultra-light set-up, he landed the whopping stripey, which he described as his ‘fish of his lifetime’.
