Huge river roach landed using forgotten flavouring

To many anglers, catching a large roach from a river is the pinnacle of angling, with a fish over the 2lb mark being a prized target for those who fish flowing waters. While some rivers now offer a much better chance of landing one of these rare specimens, it's still possible to catch big roach from rivers that are not commonly known to hold them anymore.

Having caught a 2lb 8oz 8dr roach last week from the River Wensum in Norfolk, Stephen Gibbons returned and went one better with this fine 2lb 10oz fish.

He was fishing as a guest on a private stretch, where he arrived to find the river running high and coloured. Targeting a slack behind a fallen tree on the far bank, Stephen introduced five bait droppers filled with breadcrumb and hemp, flavoured with aniseed.

Over the top, he cast a small mesh feeder filled with the same, and a breadflake hookbait. After missing a few taps on the quivertip, he had a positive pull- round at 3.30pm, and not long afterwards netted his prize.
