A decision to switch from match fishing tactics to more of a specimen angling approach paid off in spades for Steve Cowley, who landed this fine 3lb 8oz rudd from a Cambridgeshire stillwater.

He used Method feeders loaded with a mixture of 2mm and 4mm pellets, alongside 12mm wafter hookbaits, and cast one rod to open water and the other to a spot close to a lily bed.

After netting a string of quality rudd around the 1lb 8oz mark, he then hooked what he thought was a decent skimmer, and so was delighted to see the golden fish surface. It smashed his previous best for the species.
