Daniel Woolcott had the dream start to his 2023 tench campaign, catching an impressive 11lb 1oz specimen on a recent session.

Fishing a clear spot near fresh weed growth, Dan hooked the big fish on a heli-rig with a maggot feeder and maggots on the hook, and had to play it hard to avoid it reaching a submerged tree.

"I was delighted to slip the net under my prize," he told us.

"My advice would certainly be for anglers to get on the tench as early as possible, as you can see, she’s far from skinny!

"Soon after waking from their winter slumber, big tench start feeding in a bid to pile on the pounds and gain condition ahead of spawning."
