After a slow day’s fishing, Sam Smedley switched to using a tiny hookbait in the hope of catching something small and avoiding a dreaded ‘blank’ session, but the move had the opposite effect and he was soon doing battle with this 89lb sturgeon!

The Midlands angler, who was fishing at Hollyhurst Lake, had been after a big sturgeon for the past few years, but despite coming close a few times, had failed in his quest – until last week!

“I’d put on a small bait and just wanted a little carp or a bream, but then I hooked a monster!” he told us. “It took me around an island but, 25 adrenaline-filled minutes later, I had this beast in the net. The rush I got from landing it was like nothing I’ve ever experienced.”
