England looked all set to win the Masters Feeder World Champs, until a sensational comeback by hosts Hungary knocked them into second place.

Our side – Tommy Pickering, Darren Cox, Simon Fry and Richie Hull – finished day one on seven points at the rowing canal in Szeged, 10 clear of their nearest rivals.
But Hungary turned up the heat on day two to return just six points and leapfrog into the lead, while England amassed 21.5. The host nation took all three individual medals, too.
England manager Nigel Franks wasn’t too upset by the result: “Going from doing so well to finishing second is a bit deflating, but we’re still proud of silver,” he said.
“If we’d been offered that before we left home, we’d have had your hand off. It’s a long way to travel to come back empty-handed.”
Carp were the primary target for the England lads, with lots of corn fed on two lines being the best tactic.
We got through 30 tins of corn each per match,” Nigel explained. “We’d feed a line with two bait-up feeders of corn, then fish over the top of it, catch a fish, then feed the other line and drop on it, rotating throughout.”

Final Result:

  1. Hungary: 24 points

  2. England: 28.5

  3. Romania: 39

  4. France: 46

  5. Portugal: 47

  6. Italy: 49
