Now the rivers have closed for another season, many anglers will be looking for somewhere else to fish. One overlooked place is our canals, and with the majority of them not impacted by the closed season, they offer some really great fishing, often throwing up some really big surprises too. Darrell Atkins has proved what great fishing is on offer on these waterways by banking this stunning 4lb 5oz perch that he caught on the float.

“I recently went perch fishing on the Grand Union Canal, where I covered a lot of ground over several hours with very little to show for my efforts," he explained.

“That all changed, however, when I received my first bite, which came from a 3lb 9oz perch."

“Unbelievably, on my very next cast, the float slid away again, and I hooked into another chunk, which turned out to be a pristine-looking fish of 4lb 5oz.

“I caught them both on floatfished lobworms. The canals are great places to fish which often reward your efforts and you never really know what is lurking in them!"
