Many anglers dream of catching a big rudd, with a specimen regarded by most as anything over 2lb. Andy Waters, smashed that target during a session to remember, where he caught five different fish over the magical 2lb barrier, topping the haul off with a 3lb fish.

It is not the first time Andy has caught a 3lb rudd, he last had one back in 2019 from the same venue and has been looking to catch a rudd of a similar size ever since.

"I've been fishing the Fens on and off recently after hearing about some big rudd catches. I managed to locate a couple of shoals with some fantastic fish among them," Andy told us.

"I wandered around the drains, tossing out half a dozen pieces of bread in every promising area and waiting for a response. If I got one, it would lead to a cast."

"Tactics wise, it doesn't get any simpler, using a size 10 hook on a simple freeline setup."

"In my third spot, I saw a couple of fish taking bread, and there was a really good one among them. I remained patient, only casting when the fish was actively searching for bread."

"On the first cast, the fish took my floating crust hookbait. It put up a good fight, but I quickly got it into the net," he added.

"I was absolutely over the moon! The last time I caught a 3lb fish was back in 2019, so after a lot of searching, driving, and walking, it was great to finally find another one."

Andy explained that he plays all his rudd hard to prevent the fish from thrashing around and spooking the rest of the shoal, as you can often get another chance.

"I had a great session, landing specimens of 2lb, 2lb 2oz, two different rudd at 2lb 8oz, and a 2lb 11oz, topping off a very memorable session," he said.
