As anglers, we’ve probably all accepted that there will come a time when the years catch up with us and our fishing has to become a little more ‘comfortable’. But Malcolm Lancaster is not one to let age get in the way of his favourite hobby.

Despite having just turned 90, Malcolm regularly spends whole weekends on the bank, camping out overnight while carp fishing.

IF MALCOLM HAS INSPIRED YOU, HERE ARE SOME OF THE BEST VENUES TO DO YOUR FIRST NIGHT FISHING SESSION.

A few weeks ago, he celebrated his birthday weekend on the banks of Cuttle Mill Fishery on the outskirts of Birmingham. It’s a venue he’s fished for over 50 years with his son, Jeff, who told us a little more about his father’s angling journey.

“We started going fishing together when I was five years old, heading to the local canal and catching roach,” he said.

“Dad then started fishing at Stowe Pool, near his home in Lichfield, and caught some big pike. When I was old enough, we started fishing for the carp at Cuttle Mill. That was back in the early 1970s, and now, 50 years on, he loves it just as much.”

Over the decades the pair have witnessed many huge changes in carp fishing, but Malcolm sticks to his tried and trusted approach.

“When we first started, boilies weren’t a thing – it was all about worms, meat, bread and corn,” Jeff explained.

“Boilies came along in the 1980s and, to be honest, dad still fishes the same now as he did then – using boilies and PVA stringers. It still works – to prove it he’s had carp to 35lb over the years!”

Malcolm is a popular and respected figure at the fishery, where he has earned the nickname ‘Maestro’ among the regulars.

“He often catches more and bigger fish than me, although he struggles to lift the larger ones these days,” Jeff revealed.

“Dad will regularly stay out all night fishing, and while he doesn’t go out when it’s freezing cold any more, he’s taught me and others so much over the years. I think he’s an inspiration to anglers young and old.”
