Just how big was this enormous chub?

When young William Flood went for an evening’s lure fishing on his local river, the last thing he expected to land was this colossal chub, which he weighed at 9lb 3oz.

The fish, if the seventeen-year-old’s scales check out, would be one of the biggest ever landed in the UK, just a fraction off the current 9lb 5oz record.

It was caught from the Lincolnshire’s River Witham, and amazingly, was William’s first-of the species.

“I was fishing with a mate using a small soft roach lure when I hooked and landed first-ever chub,” he told us. I had no idea of how massive it was until I researched their usual weights!”

When we received the pictures, Angling Times staff agreed that there was a chance the fish had been mis-weighed, with the River Witham highly unlikely to produce a fish of such size, particularly at this time of year. Although, the venue does have some specimen chub form, with Brian Hankins landing a fish of 7lb 10oz from the waterway back in 2020.

We told William our thoughts, and whilst he appreciated them and admits he was shocked by the fish, but he’s confident that his scales were correctly zeroed.

Regardless of the fish’s size, it’s undeniably a very big chub, particularly for the small waterway, and a fantastic way to open your account with the species. Well-done William!
