After several biteless hours spent fishing from a kayak on a large Anglian Water reservoir, Mark Radcliffe knew he was facing a big challenge to get off the mark.

However, the England international kayak angler decided to try to change his fortunes, so picked up a rod already rigged with a lipless crankbait and cast it against the bank.

Right away the lure was hit and, after a short fight, Mark was delighted to have a very large perch resting in the folds of his net.

Measuring 49.5cm long, the fish is his new personal best, and when Mark put it in a weigh sling and hoisted it on the scales, he couldn’t quite believe it when the needle shot round to 5lb 1oz!

So, to double-check, he asked someone on a boat nearby to reweigh the fish, only to discover their scales confirmed the perch’s impressive weight.
