Coming out last in the draw on a carp fishing social really can put you up against it when it comes to catching fish, but that wasn't the case for Dean Welsh on a recent visit to Swan Valley Lakes, where he ended up winning the sweepstake for the heaviest and most fish of the trip.

Last in the draw...first for the trip!

Dean was fishing the Yateley booking-only venue with others from Trident Social Fishing, and ended up using his last choice pick to position himself in a corner of the lake with the least amount of line pressure.

"With only a few fish being present and most of the stock being down the other end where most the lads were, I thought it would be best to leave the rods out the water until just before dark," he told us.

"This worked wonders, as by the next morning I had at least 20-30 carp in front of me, with some of the A-Team amongst them."

Choosing to let the carp continue to build their confidence, Dean waited till 3pm before positioning all three rods in channels in the weed and giving the fish a generous helping of a new test bait boilie from Complex Baits.

"Almost instantly I was into my first carp, a near 30lb old Yateley mirror," he said.

His tactics worked straight away!

"What happened after this I never could have imagined, as the bites came steady for the next three nights."

Giving the fish around 2kg of boilie after each bite, Dean ended the session with seven fish landed, including one of the lake's real giants.

"The icing on the cake was the incredible 'Tyson' at 44lb 10oz," Dean said.

"Never did I think coming out last in the draw that I would catch the most and heaviest fish of the social - epic!"
