Setting the alarm for the early hours to get to the water by first light can be a massive edge in fishing – but, for Rowan Mersh, a more relaxed approach paid off on a recent trip.

Rowan has been fishing the River Lea at Fishers Green this season, and generally likes to be on the bank from dawn to dusk.

But, having endured many blanks, he decided on a more relaxed start to the day, this time not arriving at the river until a leisurely 11.15am.

Fishing a piece of meat tight to a snag, he was blown away when this 18lb 1oz barbel graced his net.
