To catch a specimen fish is rare at the best of times in fishing, but to do it in a competition is even rarer. This is exactly what happened to Michael Gray however, when he banked this monster 5lb 2oz stripey while fishing the Perch Cup, held at Graham Water on behalf of the Lure Anglers Society.

“It measured 51cm and fell to a Ned rig. Not only did it win me the event, but also the society’s President’s Cup, which is awarded to the largest fish caught in one of our competitions, judged by its percentage of the current British Record," Michael explained.

“Only 18 perch were caught on the day, but each weighed over 4lb, which shows the quality of the venue."

“The take was aggressive, and the fish put up a great fight, taking me halfway around the boat."

“Initially, I thought it was a trout, but when I saw it coming up through the water, I could see it was a very special perch. It was the only fish I caught on the day, but I’m not complaining!”
