Due to the sheer unpredictability of fishing, some of the personal goals we set as anglers can be achieved on the first session we try, or they can take decades—sometimes never being achieved no matter how much effort we put in.

For the past 10 years, Drennan Cup champ, Daniel Woolcott’s goal has been to catch a three-pound grayling from the Dorset Frome. On a recent trip, he finally achieved his target by landing a magnificent fish weighing just 1oz over the magic barrier.

"I have been fishing the river for grayling for over a decade, and to finally catch a 3lb-plus fish was very special indeed," Dan informed us.

"My previous best from that river was 2lb 14oz, and I had only dreamed of a Frome three, as there really aren’t many left in there at all," he added.

"I set off on my three-hour journey to a new stretch of the river that I had never fished before, which turned out to be a great decision."

"The fight was incredible and seemed to last forever. The fish jumped out three times, shaking its head, and I was so nervous."

"I could see my two red maggots hooked just in the top lip of its mouth. Fortunately, the hook held, and I managed to net it on the third attempt against the flow."
