When anglers take spinning gear down to their local rivers, they generally expect to catch pike, perch, the occasional chub, and the odd small trout where they are present. However, Barrington had the shock of his life when a huge brown trout smashed his spinner on his local River Wensum in Norfolk.
"It was a clear day with lots of sunshine, and with some time available, I decided to take my spinning gear to the river for a quick session," Barrington told us.
"I was fishing the River Wensum with the intention of targeting the stocks of chub and perch, but I had heard there were a few trout beginning to get caught."
"I headed to an area I know is good for a few bites. It’s a slightly deeper part of the river and just seems to hold fish," he informed us.
"I had a few casts in the area and hadn't been fishing long when a huge eruption on the surface occurred, and my rod locked up."
"I could see from the commotion that it was a large trout, and it hit so hard I'm sure I heard it smash into the metal spinner."
"I knew it was a good fish but had no idea just how big it was. It proceeded to run me all over the river, giving me the fight of a lifetime," he recalled.
"I got the fish in the net and unhooked it in the water. I gave it a minute, had a quick picture, and revived it. It was great to see it swim off strong!"
"I estimate it weighed around 8 lbs. What a fish it was, and I don't think I'll ever catch one bigger from a river!"
