Zig rigs are one of the most devastating tactics for catching carp in the spring, but despite their well documented success, most anglers still don't cast them out. Dean Welsh found just how effective they can be on his recent visit to the historic Yateley Match Lake, where he caught a staggering 12 carp and three catfish on the method to over 50lb.
Topping the Newcastle based angler's haul was 'The Big Ghostie' at 41lb 12oz, proving once again that some of the biggest and oldest fish will fall to this off the bottom approach when used correctly.
"Arriving on a very busy lake, I decided the best thing to do would be to watch the water whilst waiting for some swims to come free," Dean told us.
"It was apparent most of the fish were in the upper layers, and learning the air pressure was rising across the next week and with not much being caught on the bottom, I decided to give zigs a go properly for the first time since joining.

All Dean's fish fell to Thinking Anglers Zig Barrels in a mixture of colours. These were presented alongside TA Zig Kickers, size 8 TA Curve Point hooks and 13lb TA ZFX hooklinks. A quick blast of Sticky Baits Peach and Pepper spray completed each trap.
