ON his final session targeting perch before leaving them to get on with spawning, Craig Woolhouse hit the jackpot with this 4lb 14oz specimen from a local commercial fishery. It was the culmination of a great few weeks for the Leicester angler, during which he landed a string of other big stripeys over 3lb to a best of 4lb 6oz.

This time Craig’s winning tactic was a 4ins roach deadbait, with the head snipped off for added attraction, cast tight to an island. To minimise resistance, he used a 1oz lead on a free-running rig. At the business end was a size 6 wide gape hook to ensure a firm hookhold in the perch’s bony mouth. The fish set a new PB for Craig, and he backed it up with another quality perch of 3lb 10oz in the same trip.
