Huge barbel landed from famous Kings Weir Fishery

It's not taken long for the Kings Weir fishery on the River Lea to regain last season’s form, with Gary Newland being the latest angler to sample its big barbel delights after banking this fine 18lb 2oz fish.

With warm weather and heavy rain falling, he headed to the weir pool hoping to be met with good conditions, and whilst they were trickier than Gary hoped, he was full of confidence.

"With warm weather and recent heavy rain, I knew a big barbel was on the cards," Gary told us.

"I checked the availability at the weir pool at the King's Weir Fishery, and headed down with high expectations."

"After bait dropping a large bed of hemp and pellets, I spent time watching the debris build-up and assessing the flow before making my first cast."

"Due to the conditions I opted for strong tackle and a trimmed-down Aqua Baits boilie were all that was needed. Weed had become an issue, so regular casting was necessary."

"After a very slow but positive bite, I was met with a steam train heading out into the weir and after several heart-pounding minutes, I finally netted her."

"Under the torchlight, I was met with a monstrous barbel and a new personal best of 18lb-2oz. Thanks to Andrew, who got out of bed to witness and photograph it for me."

YOU NEED ONE OF THE BEST BARBEL RODS TO FISH PROPERLY WHEN THE CONDITIONS ARE TOUGH.
