National Fishing Month aims for summer surge!

RUNNING for the entire month of August, angling’s flagship push to attract new and returning rods is all set for a big return.

Key to this initiative are hundreds of free and low-cost events in every region of the country, where people of all ages and backgrounds can make their first-ever casts under the watchful eye of friendly, qualified Angling Trust coaches.

While fishing would be hard pressed to repeat the once-in-a-generation boost of the Covid pandemic, when many shops ran out of bait and starter kits, it’s hoped that other factors could weigh firmly in the sport’s favour this time around. Hot weather, the boom in domestic holidays and fishing’s credentials as a low-cost, healthy and family-friendly hobby could all help to make 2022 a year to truly remember.

The month-long celebration embraces all angling disciplines

Endorsed by the Environment Agency, Angling Trust and Angling Trades Association, the event promises to bring a welcoming, hands-on approach to every corner of the country. “The ultimate celebration of all that angling has to offer, for all communities across the UK” is how ATA chairman Andrew Race described the current push, urging all anglers and groups to work together.

For many, NFM will be their first taste of fishing

“We encourage everyone to get involved with the many events planned and, for some we hope it will be the first step in their journey to being a life-long angler,” echoed the EA’s Heidi Stone, with the agency providing a rod licence waiver at many events, making it even simpler and cheaper for newcomers to take part.

“We encourage everyone to get involved"

“For anyone looking for fun, safe and friendly family activities during the summer holidays, this August will be the month to get outdoors and learn to fish,” said Angling Trust Head of Participation, Clive Copeland, with the Trust urging all anglers to help spread the word to help grow the sport.
