A weekend-long event dedicated to the nation’s favourite species has been hailed a roaring success, after countless fish were landed, including a shock 45lb carp, at the National Tench Championships.

Held at Oxford’s Linear Fisheries and organised by The Tenchfishers group, 34 anglers battled it out over two days. Bruce Ruscoe eventually took top spot with eight tench, earning tackle prizes plus a £250 voucher for his efforts.

Event organiser Steve Innes said: “As well as plenty of tench, some big carp were landed too – which is quite an achievement on tench gear!

“We’ll be restaging the event again next year at the same venue, and anybody is welcome to come along.”
