There aren't many fisheries in the country that hold a carp breaching the 60lb barrier, with even fewer of these being open-access day ticket venues. RH Fisheries’ Monument One lake is now home to an immaculate 64lb common carp, which was stocked into the lake from their very own fish farm.
Rob Hales and his son Harry are the masterminds behind this unique stocking. While this fish is one of the biggest carp in the UK, just 4lb shy of the official British record, they believe they have an even bigger common that they missed this time around when netting their stock ponds.
After speaking with Rob and Harry, their passion for angling is clear. Although the duo has faced some criticism and continues to do so, their mantra of producing big, healthy fish that are accessible to any angler in the country is evident.
"We have a variety of venues across the RH Fisheries portfolio, and despite stocking some huge carp over 45lb into our Avenue Fishery, we wanted to replicate this for our day ticket anglers."
"Not everyone can afford or has the time to join a syndicate, and some anglers only get one or two weekends a year to enjoy their fishing. I've always wanted every angler who comes to RH to enjoy their time with us."
"The stocking of this 64lb common made a lot of sense to us, as it gives anyone who comes here, regardless of circumstance, the chance to land a fish of a lifetime. I'm very proud of that," Rob explained to us.
In a monumental effort to grow fish, Rob and Harry have set up a highly sophisticated operation, inspired by the best koi keepers in the world and successful carp farmer Nick Harvey. They’ve custom-built a high-tech system comprising an indoor 12,000-gallon tank and drum filters, run in conjunction with a heat pump to keep the water at an optimum 32 degrees.
