On his first trip of the year to the River Thames, Brett Davies smashed his perch personal best by 15oz with this impressive 4lb 9oz fish. With the river pushing through after heavy rain, he methodically targeted slack water areas with a Ned-rigged creature bait.

Four hours into the session, he made a long cast across the river, and on the third bounce of the lure, hit into a heavy fish. Brett wondered if a small pike or a chub had taken the lure, but when it reached the near margin and he caught a glimpse of the black stripes and red fins, he realised what he was connected to!

After a nervy few moments when the fish surged for cover, he had it safely in the net. It measured 47.5cm, and a delighted Brett described it as a ‘glorious’ river perch.
