Fresh research has underlined the far-reaching wellbeing benefits that angling can offer.
The new academic paper, which was undertaken by Anglia Ruskin University, shows that in addition to reducing the symptoms of depression, fishing boosts individuals’ social connections, and helps them deal with anxiety and related conditions.

Led by Professor Lee Smith, the study examined the effect angling had on the mental and physical health of 1,752 individuals from various ages and backgrounds, and then compared the results with non-anglers. It was supported by mental health charity Tackling Minds and fishing retailer Angling Direct.
Professor Smith said the study “highlights the potential of recreational angling to improve mental health,” adding that lakes and rivers offered “a unique setting for relaxation and rejuvenation.”

While angling’s therapeutic value is certainly no secret to health professionals these days, it’s hoped that further evidence could help safeguard the sport as an even greater force for good.
“We’ve been told many times by our service users that if it were not for fishing sessions, they don’t think they’d be alive today,” said Tackling Minds founder David Lyons.
