Hot on the heels of his recent specimen dace capture, Daniel Bouskila has landed a sensational brace of dace weighing 15oz and 1lb 1oz, respectively—both fish that many anglers would consider a catch of a lifetime.
Armed with just a rod and the essentials, Dan decided to try a completely new stretch of river close to his home, a place he had never fished before. The stream was wild and overgrown, and with little knowledge of whether any fish existed in the venue, he began by introducing some maggots into a likely-looking swim. While It didn't take long before he got some bites, the last thing he expected to catch were dace of this size.

"With some family commitments to attend to, I had around four hours spare for a quick session, so I decided to explore a river I had always thought about fishing," Daniel told us.
"I say river, but it’s more like a stream. I'm not actually sure where I ended up fishing after walking a few miles, getting lost, stung, scratched, and snagged while trying to track the water down."
"After moving around for a little while, I found a nice swim with a lovely steady flow on the far side."
"I trickled in some maggots for at least ten minutes before casting. This takes a lot of willpower and discipline for me, as I’m like a kid on the bank—I just want to fish," he said.
"After the first trot through, the silvers—being chub, roach, and dace—came thick and fast. I had three pints of maggots and used them all within three hours."
The fishing exceeded Dan's hopes, and after catching a couple of bigger dace, a change of tactics were in order. He began fishing well over-depth,holding the rig almost still and inching it through the swim carefully to try and fool one of the larger dace that he hoped was residing in his swim.
"I had a bite and saw a fish splash on the surface. Thinking it might be a dace, I played it carefully, and I couldn’t believe my eyes when it neared the net—it was huge!"
"Leaving the fish in the net to recover while I sorted things out, I couldn’t resist another trot through the swim. Unbelievably, the next bite produced a dace that looked the same size."
"Weighing the fish, the biggest went 1lb 1oz, with the second a touch smaller at 15oz. I couldn't have been happier with the result, what a session and i’ll definitely be returning," Dan concluded.
