As the weather cools into autumn, the big perch are now on the feed, and if you're aiming to catch a personal best 'stripey', targeting them now will give you a great chance of landing one.
In recent weeks, we've received numerous reports of fantastic perch captures, caught using a variety of tactics from a wide array of waters. So, no matter where you are in the country or the venues you enjoy fishing, there could well be some superb perch waiting to be caught.
James Roby has been targeting perch on his local Norfolk Broads in his last couple of sessions with great success, landing a 4lb fish using a classic perch bait: worms.
'Because the weather was starting to change, I thought I’d have a session targeting perch on the Norfolk Broads," James said.
“I prefer a natural bait approach, so my trip was always going to revolve around worms."
“Targeting a spot close to the bank where I regularly fed chopped worm, I landed a few small perch, soon followed by three around the 1lb mark."
“I felt there was more to be had from the swim. Sure enough, things went quiet for around 10 minutes, then the rod tip sprang over and I lifted into what I knew was a considerably bigger fish."
“After guiding it away from the weed, I couldn’t grab the net fast enough and was chuffed to land my new PB perch of 4lb exactly.”
Jamie Cooke was another angler who tussled with a large perch, describing it as one of his top three angling moments. This time, the fish was tempted using lure fishing tactics.
“While fishing a charity match at Caldecotte Lake, Bucks, I caught this perch that left me in shock," Jamie told us.
“Although I didn’t weigh it, the fish measured 49cm. Imagine the size of it with a full belly in winter!"
“I caught it using a 9cm soft plastic lure fished on a 5g jighead, and from the moment I hooked it I thought that it was a pike."
“It put up an epic fight and earned me third place in the contest, as well as the specimen trophy."
“Catching it is definitely in my life’s top three fishing moments!”

Lincolnshire angler Tom Peden recently caught what he describes as a ‘perch angler’s dream’ when he slipped the net under this immaculate fish weighing 4lb 8oz.
It was banked on a misty morning from a shallow stretch of his local river, where he’d located a deep hole. Using a vintage split cane rod and centrepin reel,he trotted a worm in the hope of beating his previous PB of 3lb 2oz.
When his float dipped, Tom connected with a perch that fought hard and fully tested his antique tackle before he managed to steer it into the landing net.
In his words, the perch was ‘deep-bodied, beautifully marked, and looked in excellent condition’.
