Nash Tackle's Oli Davies is like many other carp anglers in the UK who, when conditions aren't right, switch their attentions to other species. That choice proved a good one recently when he banked a phenomenal brace of perch from his local Grand Union Canal, weighing 4lb and 3lb 8oz.

“After the recent rains, the predator fishing has been out of sorts on the canal, so I’ve been trotting for dace and chub on the upper Lea," he told us.

“However, on Friday I arrived to find the river low and clear, and the shoals of silvers were gone.

"So I headed to the canal instead, which had a green hue rather than the muddy brown of recent weeks.

"I soon caught a few bait-sized roach, which I trotted down the canal during the last hour of daylight.

“After a couple of moves I had two bites in quick succession while running the float alongside one of the barges.

“The first perch weighed 4lb exactly, and the second was a bit skinnier at 3lb 8oz. It was a proper result for an impromptu couple of hours’ perching!”
