Former Olympian-turned-big-fish specialist Dean Macey landed the biggest chub of his career just before the coarse fishing season closed on March 15. The chub in question, weighed a staggering 8lb 3oz, making it the second-largest specimen reported this season, caught from the River Lea at Kings Weir.

Finding the stretch in perfect trim for trotting, Dean had an early 6lb 15oz fish before heading to a swim that had seen little recent attention.

“It’s a short run, so it took a little while to work out where to feed and at what depth to run my double red maggot hookbait through,” he said.

“After a couple of hours the float buried and my strike was met with that unmistakeable head thump."

“The fight was dogged, and the fish twice tried to bury its head under my feet. My size 18 hook and 5lb fluorocarbon hooklink held, and I soon saw what was clearly a ‘proper’ chub roll on the surface.” After a nervy few minutes, Dean had it in the net.

“It beats my PB by 2oz, and that was a fish I never thought I’d better,” added Dean.
