With no action coming on boilie hookbaits, George Cornwell set up a second rod for rolling meat, and tempted this beast of a chub from the Hampshire Avon weighing 7lb 14oz.
He opted for a weighted size 2 hook and two extra SSG shot pinched on the line to ensure it moved slowly along the gravel between weed beds. After holding the rod for five minutes he received a tentative, tapping bite, which made him wonder if an eel was pulling at the meat.
Striking into the fish, George soon realised he’d hooked a chub, and when it surfaced, he bundled it into the net before it could reach the nearest snag.
Once it was safely on the mat, he quickly realised it was the biggest known chub in the stretch, and one he’d caught two years previously while trotting.
