Lure angler catches one of the UK’s rarest fish

A lure angler has slipped the net under one of the rarest fish in the UK – in the shape of this impressive ferox trout weighing 10lb. The species is best described as a long-living and fish-eating brown trout, found in large glacial lakes.

Although predominantly a fish of Scotland and Ireland, there are a few populations of these giants in waters further south, including Wales and The Lake District.

It was one such water that Richard Archer was fishing when he latched into the striking specimen.

“There are very few venues south of the Scottish border that contain ferox, and I’d heard that this big natural lake was one of them,” the Westin-backed angler told us.

“Although I was pike fishing, I’d always fancied catching a ferox, so I rigged up a small, soft plastic stickleback imitation lure, just in case.”

Richard then had a few casts with it, and soon after he hooked the huge trout.

“It battled like a demon and, pound for pound, gave one of the best fights I’ve ever experienced,” he added.

The current UK rod-caught record for a ferox stands at 14.4 kg (31lb 12oz) – a fish from Loch Awe in Argyllshire.

AS WELL AS FEROX, THESE ARE THE OTHER RARE FISH YOU CAN CATCH IN THE UK.
