Wirral fishery owner Steve Openshaw has won plenty in his time, but never a National title – until last week’s Angling Trust Masters event at Partridge Lakes, where the Fish O’Mania finalist took gold with a 60-950 net of F1s.

Drawing peg 10 on the Ribbon Pool, Mosella-backed Steve fished worm head over caster long to the island at 13m to keep fish of all sizes going into the net, ending the day around six kilos in front of runner-up Dave Brown Senior with 54-425 off Willow Pool peg 4, bronze going to Mike Astbury with 53-700 from peg 11 on the Pine Pool.

Result: 1 S Openshaw, Mosella, 60-950; 2 D Brown Snr, Partridge Lakes, 54-425; 3 M Astbury, Poplars AC, 53-700; 4 J Paveley, The Oaks, 50-675; 5 A Naylor, Oakengates Angling Centre, 41-775; 6 T Dukes, Barton-upon-Humber, 39-200.
