A REMARKABLE haul of highly unusual sixgill sharks was taken by a group of anglers out of Wales last week.
Sixgill sharks are ancient creatures which, scientifically-speaking, have more close relatives among fossil records than they do living species. But on the trip with McKie’s Fishing Charters, off Milford Haven, they became a relatively common sight, with four anglers sharing a remarkable haul of 14 fish to over 450lb.
Skipper Kevin McKie said that the action was instant once they reached an area known as Jurassic Park.
“Only 35 minutes after putting the anchor down we hooked into the first sixgill, and over 21 hours we landed 14 of them between 25lb and just over 450lb,” he said.
“All the sharks boated were kept in excellent condition, and welfare was paramount,” he added.
