After racking up a ‘serious amount of blanks’ in search of eels, it would have been easy for Norfolk angler Stephen Gibbons to fall apart when he missed a bite at 2am on a recent trip.

But after casting straight back out, he had another take before he’d even managed to get back into his sleeping bag, and landed this superb fish of 6lb 3oz.

A truly superb eel.
A truly superb eel.

"I can remember landing it and shining the light on it and thinking wow, what an incredible fish to catch," Stephen told us.

"I have genuinely never been so excited at a capture in my angling career and It has fueled me to want to catch an even bigger eel or at least try!"

"When my friend Jack was taking the photos we both couldn’t quite believe I had caught such an incredible fish and has luck would have it , it was jacks first invite to the water so he was glad he could witness it."

"It fell to lobworms fished four feet off the bottom on a spot close-in where I had fed dead maggots and cat meat doused in crab liquid."

The fish continues a great start to the season for Stephen, who has already landed an 11lb 4oz tench.
