Captor Lloyd Watson confirmed the news this morning in a post on social media.

"The British Record Fish Committee have officially accepted my claim for the British Record pike.

"What an overwhelming experience - these things don't happen to guys like me, but officially it has!

"The support I received from guys I've never met and who have spent their whole life chasing a fish like that, was so humbling. The pike community should be proud."

Lloyd confirmed that the scales used to test the fish were actually weighing 1oz light, so the claim was made for 47lb 6oz, however, as they were tested in 5g increments the Committee saw fit to keep with the original claimed weight of 47lb 5oz.

The catch topples the previous 46lb 13oz record caught by Roy Lewis from Llandegfedd in Wales all the way back in 1992, a record that has stood the test of time.

With Chew Valley producing one of the best spells of specimen pike fishing in history, it might not be quite so long this time before the record is broken again, but only time will tell.
